Parintins is famous for a folk festival that takes place every year at the end of June. The festival is recognized as a Cultural Heritage event. The performances symbolize a dispute between two folklore groups, Boi Garantido (red) and Boi Caprichoso (blue), which takes place in a large stadium called the Bumbódromo It has the capacity for 35 thousand spectators. The Parintins Folklore Festival is broadcast on TV across the country.
There are thousands of tourists from Brazil and the world who follow the songs of the Garantido and Caprichoso oxen. At the time of the festival, the population of Parintins, of 115 thousand inhabitants, almost doubles. According to the city hall, around 80 thousand tourists visit the city during the festival.
During the year the city puts on smaller shows. We were lucky to attend the Boi Bumba Festival. It is similar to Carnavale, the music, the costumes, the excitement, but its purpose is different. It is meant to help keep alive the culture and dances of the indigenous people.
We tendered ashore, walked to the Cathedral, shopped, got Jim a beer, took a tuk tuk ride to the stadium, and then enjoyed the show. Everyone at the show got a caipirinha, a drink made from lemon, sugar, and sugar cane alcohol - cachaca.
